We’re Hiring: KTP Associate – AI-Enabled Business Intelligence Engineer

We’re teaming up with Teesside University on a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP), and we’re looking for a talented graduate to lead it. This is a 30-month role at the heart of our business in Middlesbrough, building an AI-powered platform that will shape how Unity makes decisions for years to come.

KTPs are part funded by Innovate UK and bring together a business, a university and a graduate to deliver a real innovation project. You’ll be employed by Teesside University but based with our team at Brunel House full time, so you’ll be part of Unity from day one.

The project

You’ll design, build and embed a bespoke AI-enabled intelligence platform for Unity. It will bring our systems, data sources, workflows and reporting together into one AI-assisted decision support system.

It’s a natural fit for us. We help our customers bring their technology together into one clear thread, and this project does the same for our own data. The platform will be built in five layers:

  1. Data ingestion and semantic integration
  2. A unified reporting dataset
  3. Business analytics and performance visualisation
  4. Business workflow automation
  5. AI-integrated large language model (LLM) capability

What you’ll do

You’ll own the project from start to finish, with close support from supervisors at Unity and Teesside University. Along the way you will:

  • Get to know how Unity works and investigate our existing data systems and technology
  • Design a unified data architecture that gives the business a solid data foundation
  • Integrate AI and LLMs into our day-to-day operational intelligence
  • Pilot the platform in a test environment, checking security and governance
  • Roll it out across Unity, supporting and training the team as it goes live
  • Help explore how the platform could scale, including as a potential SaaS product
  • Co-author and present academic papers at journals and conferences

Who we’re looking for

You’ll have a degree in Computer Science, AI, Data Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems or a related subject, ideally a Master’s or equivalent experience. We’re also looking for:

  • Strong programming skills, especially Python and SQL
  • Experience with software development, databases, APIs and data integration
  • Experience building dashboards or BI solutions in tools like Power BI or Tableau
  • Knowledge of AI, machine learning, workflow automation or LLMs
  • The ability to explain technical ideas clearly to non-specialists

It’s a bonus if you’ve worked with cloud technologies, RAG systems, CRM or service management systems, or have a PhD or industry experience in AI or digital transformation.

Above all, we want someone who is innovative, self-motivated, methodical and a real team player.

Why join Unity

We’re a team of 18 providing telecommunications, cloud hosting, data centre services, software development and hardware. As one of a small team, your work will be seen and felt across the whole business.

  • Real responsibility: you’ll own a high-profile project and see it through to delivery
  • Development: a dedicated personal training budget, plus mentoring from industry and academic supervisors
  • Time off: 20 days’ holiday plus bank holidays, and 6 paid wellbeing days a year through our Wellbeing & Rewards Programme
  • Flexibility: time for medical and professional appointments, and for life’s big moments such as weddings, civil partnerships or religious observance (subject to T&Cs)
  • A culture of celebration: we mark wins of every kind together on the floor, from the first ring of the bell to the big-win claxon, with a monthly £100 prize draw for great behaviours
  • Career growth: a role that bridges business and academia, and a strong platform to fast-track your career
